Field Notes

Field Notes: Entry #1 – Bigfoot (Sasquatch)

Field Notes Journal creatures and Legends

There are places in the forest where the trees grow a little quieter.

Not silent, just… attentive.

This is where Bigfoot is often said to be seen.

In my field notes, Bigfoot is one of the most enduring modern cryptid stories. Described as a large, upright, human-like figure moving through deep forest regions, Sasquatch sightings have been reported across North America for generations, especially in remote wilderness where human presence fades and the natural world feels especially alive.

Field Observations & Recent Reports

Field Notes Bigfoot Sasquatch Cryptid Creatures and Legends

Reports commonly describe:

  • A tall, hair-covered figure moving between trees
  • Heavy footprints pressed into soft soil or snow
  • Broken branches or subtle disturbances along forest paths
  • A strong sense of presence before anything is seen
  • A strong, pungent odor that burns the nostrils

While many sightings are debated, reinterpreted, or left unverified, new reports continue to surface.

In March and April 2026, a surge of alleged sightings in Northeast Ohio drew renewed attention to the legend. Witnesses across Portage and Trumbull counties described encounters with tall, dark, hairy figures estimated between 6–10 feet in height. Some reports also included large footprints, measuring up to 14–16 inches, found in nearby natural areas.

What made this cluster of reports especially notable was the timing. Multiple sightings were described within the same week, including activity not only in rural forested zones, but also near residential backyards and surrounding green spaces.

Additional reports from Ashland County described “loud wood knocks” and track discoveries near the Audubon Wetlands Preserve, while the long-studied Salt Fork State Park region, which is often referred to in folklore communities as part of a “Sasquatch Triangle”, once again appeared in local conversation.

Despite the volume of accounts, no definitive photographic or video evidence has emerged. Local authorities have reported no official incidents tied to the sightings, though discussion has continued through online communities and local interest groups. Reports of first-hand accounts have been fascinating to listen to.

Pop Culture Imprint

Bigfoot has also been shaped heavily by storytelling and film.

One of the most recognizable portrayals remains Harry and the Hendersons, which shifted the cultural image of Bigfoot from something feared in the forest into something gentle, curious, and strangely familiar.

That version of the legend left a lasting mark in my my mind as well as our current culture, not as a monster story, but as a reminder that not everything unknown is meant to be frightening. Sometimes it is simply… misunderstood.

Folklore Theories & Modern Interpretation

Alongside physical interpretations, Bigfoot has also become part of broader folklore speculation.

Some modern theories suggest Sasquatch may not be strictly a physical animal, but something more elusive, described in some circles as:

  • interdimensional or “between-reality” beings
  • entities that appear briefly in remote or transitional landscapes
  • phenomena associated with dense forests, wilderness boundaries, or so-called “thin places”

These ideas often arise in response to the recurring pattern found in many reports: brief sightings, uncertain details, and encounters that seem to dissolve as quickly as they appear.

Whether viewed through a physical, cultural, or symbolic lens, the consistency of these stories across time and geography continues to make Bigfoot one of the most persistent figures in modern folklore.

Artistic Interpretation

In my watercolor field studies, I don’t approach Bigfoot as something to prove or define.

Instead, I see him as a symbol of the deep forest itself, untamed, unmeasured, and still outside full human understanding.

He represents the parts of nature that resist capture. The spaces that don’t submit easily to explanation. The quiet reminder that not everything in creation is meant to be fully contained.

Some things remain in motion, just beyond the edge of certainty.

Field Notes Classification

Cryptids – Hidden creatures said to exist in the natural world

Bigfoot belongs to the category of cryptids: beings described as physical, natural, and animal-like, yet still unverified through scientific documentation.

Reflection

There is something deeply human about the way stories like this persist.

Maybe it’s curiosity.

Maybe it’s imagination.

Or maybe it’s simply our way of acknowledging that the world is still larger than our maps.

Whether seen as an animal, myth, or mystery, Bigfoot remains one of the most recognizable figures in modern folklore, not because he has been proven, but because he continues to be noticed.

And sometimes, noticing is where all good field notes begin.

Field Note Status

Ongoing observation. Reports and interpretations continue to be collected and recorded.

Other entries that echo similar patterns or observations:

  • Mothman – another modern cryptid tied to sightings and unexplained encounters
  • Loch Ness Monster – a long-reported creature said to inhabit a specific landscape
  • Will-o’-the-Wisp – a presence often linked to remote places and uncertain perception
