Self Control Iris Watercolor
Meet Iris, the floral embodiment of Self-Control from my “Flowers of the Spirit” watercolor series. Inspired by Galatians 5:22-23, this artwork was painted as a visual reminder of the divine qualities we’re invited to cultivate through the Holy Spirit. Notice the bright center, embodying a fiery spirit held back by petals resembling gentle waves, guarding the flame with their serene embrace. The virtue is delicately lettered along the stem, making each piece a soft-spoken declaration of God’s character at work in us.
Symbolism & Meaning:
The iris symbolizes clarity, resolve, and wisdom under pressure. Known for its regal stature and sword-like leaves, the iris reflects the quiet strength needed to master oneself in a chaotic world. The Hebrew word “רֶסֶן” (resen) means “bridle” or “restraint,” while the Greek “ἐγκράτεια (enkrateia)” speaks of inner strength and dominion over the passions. Together, they remind us that self-control is not about suppressing who we are but about yielding ourselves to God’s refining power.
Why I Chose This Flower:
The iris has always struck me as elegant yet grounded—delicate, but not fragile. I love that it often blooms in early spring, right when everything feels full of potential. That felt fitting for self-control—because it’s a virtue that blooms best when we’re actively growing, even when it’s tough. For me, this flower is a quiet champion—graceful, strong, and unwavering in the wind.
