Longsuffering Aster Watercolor

Representing Longsuffering in my Flowers of the Spirit watercolor series is the delicate yet determined Aster. With “Longsuffering” painted along its slender stem, this floral portrait captures the quiet strength of patience, perseverance, and grace under pressure. It’s a gentle reminder that beauty often blooms slowly — and that’s okay.

Symbolism & Meaning:

Asters are late bloomers — arriving just as summer fades and autumn whispers in. That alone makes them a perfect symbol of longsuffering, the kind of spiritual patience that endures hardship without bitterness. In Greek, the word used in Galatians is makrothumia (μακροθυμία) — meaning endurance, patience, and a refusal to give up on people, even when it’s hard. Longsuffering is love’s staying power, faith’s deep breath, and grace in motion.

Why I Chose This Flower:

I chose the Aster because it’s a flower that doesn’t mind waiting its turn. While flashier blooms may come and go, the Aster quietly shows up when most flowers are calling it quits. It reminds me that God’s timeline is not our own, and that waiting — even weeping — can still lead to blooming. It’s a patient hope, painted in soft purples and gentle greens.
