Why I Created This Healing Art Tutorial
The idea for this painting came from the classic book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein — a heart-wrenching story of unconditional love, sacrifice, and presence. I wanted to create a piece that honors that same sense of rootedness, care, and enduring love, while giving you a way to process your own grief through creativity.
As I painted this tree, I remembered my own experiences — meeting my dad later in life, cherishing the moments I had with him, and remembering my grandfather, who was a true father figure. This painting is a gentle reminder that even in the midst of loss, we can find joy, gratitude, and healing.
Step-by-Step Watercolor Tutorial
This painting is beginner-friendly, but rooted in reflection. Here’s how we’ll do it:
Materials I Used:
- Mei Lang Pretty Excellent Watercolor set (student-grade, perfect for beginners)
- Mimic Round #6 and Princeton Neptune Round #10 brushes
- Paul Rubens 100% Cotton Cold Pressed Watercolor Paper (5×7)
Step 1: Trunk and Heart
Start by painting the tree trunk with Van Dyke Brown, using a coffee-like consistency. Avoid the heart you’ve drawn, as it will be filled later. Add subtle shadows while the paint is wet to create texture in the bark. Think of each brushstroke as honoring the love of a parent or grandparent — rough edges and all.
Step 2: Filling in the Heart
Use a lighter tone to fill in the heart, so it stands out against the tree trunk. This represents the love that continues to grow, even amidst grief.
Step 3: Painting the Leaves
Grab your olive green and start adding leaves. Dab gently, layering lighter and darker shades for depth and texture. The foliage represents life, growth, and the unique ways each of us is cherished.
Step 4: Adding Grass and Background
