Proverbs 31:18 The Significance of Perceiving

Let’s dive into the verse’s opening half, “She perceives that her merchandise is good.” At first glance, it may appear as a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit. However,  as I have already alluded to, we’re about to unravel a deeper layer of meaning that transcends the world of commerce.

Observing the Proverbs 31 Woman’s insightful approach to life her perception extends far beyond the tangible; it’s about experiencing and tasting the richness of every moment.

Beyond Entrepreneurship: Unveiling the Deeper Meaning

While the Proverbs 31 woman may indeed have entrepreneurial prowess, let’s venture beyond the obvious. Although many studies on Proverbs 31:18 will focus on being a ā€œBoss Ladyā€ I have to say that is not what this verse is alluding to. The profound significance of her perception extends far beyond the realm of commerce. Lets look at the word perceive which in Hebrew is the word “ṭā ā€˜am” in context.

Meaning of the  Hebrew Word “ṭā ā€˜am”

The Hebrew word “ṭā ā€˜am” is  a word that encompasses tasting, experiencing, and discovering, revealing the depth of her insight.

The Proverbs 31 Woman is fully immersed with experiential knowledge of the fruit of her efforts.

She is tasting the bread she bakes, as the aroma of butter wafts through the room she feels the warmth.

The Proverbs 31 woman feels the clothes she has woven, the fine linen gently sways across her skin in the breeze.

Everything she does, she is fully immersed in the experience. She engages in creating every aspect of her home, from the clothes her children are wearing to the wine gracing the dinner table. There is nothing she is not a part of, she is involved in the smallest of details.

To perceive isn’t just to look and take account with your eyes. It’s so much more than that. It is an action, an experience. Some may say it is the evidence of a life truly lived.

Applying “ṭā ā€˜am” in Scripture

I have been teaching Psalm 34 to my children and in verse 8 it uses the same word “ṭā ā€˜am”.

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;

Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

Psalm 34:8

When we experience the Lord we are immersed in His goodness. Sure life will have problems but His goodness transcends everything. It’s not enough to observe that the Lord is good. It says taste and see. We never truly know until we are actively engaged.

Another lesson in perceiving stems from the story of a man named Barzillai in 2 Samuel,  who housed David in a time of need and then declined David’s offer of blessings. In the passage, the same Hebrew word “ṭā ā€˜am” is applied to a man of wisdom. His discernment reveals he is not able to fully immerse himself in the offering David has given.

ā€œI am today eighty years old. Can I discern between the good and bad? Can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear any longer the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should your servant be a further burden to my lord the king?

2Samuel 19:35

The Proverbs 31 Woman’s Insightful Approach to Life

Our journey continues as we delve into the remarkable insights that the Proverbs 31 woman possesses. Her life is a tapestry of wisdom, and her perceptive nature shapes her decisions and actions.

The Proverbs 31 woman uses her  “ṭā ā€˜am” to fully utilize her abilities proving she is highly intelligent and a frugal manager of her God-given gifts.

Remember that the Proverbs 31 woman is not just a model of business cleverness but a beacon of wisdom in all aspects of her life.

Moving forward we continue to illuminate the night with wisdom, exploring the second half of Proverbs 31:18 and how her lamp of dedication burns brightly even in the darkest hours in the upcoming sections.

Proverbs 31:18 Part 2: The Unwavering Light of Her Lamp

Now let’s turn our focus on the latter part of Proverbs 31:18: “And her lamp does not go out by night.” This intriguing phrase evokes questions about her tireless dedication and the deeper spiritual meaning it holds.

A Lamp That Illuminates the Darkness

We’ll start by dissecting the symbolism behind the unceasing lamp. What does it represent, and why is it significant that it doesn’t extinguish at night?

Spiritual Vigilance and Commitment

Proverbs 31:18 alludes to a profound commitment and spiritual vigilance embodied by the Proverbs 31 woman. Discover how her unwavering faith fuels her actions and keeps her light burning even in the darkest hours.

As a homemaker, we face many trials, and even more so as Christians. We can look at her lamp remaining a glowing beacon even in the darkest hour, a symbol of resilience in adversity.

Her lamp, shining brightly in the night, symbolizes her ability to withstand life’s trials with unwavering faith. That faith can only remain steadfast when it is securely reliant on God, our Creator, Savior, Abba(Father).

Lessons from the Wise and Foolish Virgins

Drawing parallels from the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, we’ll learn how the Proverbs 31 woman’s constant readiness aligns with her faith in the Messiah’s return.

In Matthew 25:1-13 Jesus gives this parable.

ā€œThen the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.

6 ā€œAnd at midnight a cry was heard: ā€˜Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ 7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ā€˜Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ā€˜No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.

11 ā€œAfterward the other virgins came also, saying, ā€˜Lord, Lord, open to us!’ 12 But he answered and said, ā€˜Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’

13 ā€œWatch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour [b]in which the Son of Man is coming.”

Of course in this parable those with the lamps that are equipped with oil represent those who have faith in Jesus Christ. They have the Holy Spirit and are ready for His return.

Those who neglected their lamps, represent those who rejected faith and do not have the Holy Spirit with them. They are turned away.

Obviously, the Proverbs 31 woman is literally Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother so she would not have known Jesus, but her expectation for the  Messiah of her people would have been strong! If she only knew that her descendant would one day be the Savior of the World, what would she have thought?

If she could hold steady to faith before His coming, we can hold even more tightly to faith after His coming and while waiting expectantly on His return for us!

Have faith, He loves you!

Balancing Self-Care and Service

While the Proverbs 31 woman seems like a workaholic you need to understand that extreme view is not a burden you need to commit yourself to. There is a delicate equilibrium that the Proverbs 31 woman maintains between self-care, family, and her marriage. Guided by wisdom she avoids letting the candle burn out at both ends. This ensures that her lamp remains a guiding light for her household.

Prioritizing Family and Faith

In Proverbs 31:18 we can see how the Proverbs 31 woman strikes a balance between caring for her family and nurturing her faith. She fulfills her role as an ʿēzer (help meet) within her household and shines as a beacon of godly living.

It is infinitely important to prioritize our faith. Spending time praying, reading the bible, renewing our minds, and worshiping God refreshes us in a way that nothing else can. Even a day in the most luxurious spa can not wash our minds like the word of God is able.

When we are connected to our God, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Especially when it comes to helping our family.

The Call to Be Salt and Light

Finally let’s take a look at the  Proverbs 31 woman’s role as a beacon of faith, embodying the call to be salt and light in the world. Her example constantly inspires us to live a life pleasing to God.

Her actions reflect her commitment to honoring God in all she does, setting an example for us to follow. But remember these verses in their entirety encompass her life over many years. We are not to compare her lifetime highlight reel to our current moment in life.

Living with Intention

We should maintain a heart of thankfulness and remember the abundant blessings we receive from God.

The Proverbs 31 woman doesn’t keep her faith to herself; she shares it with others, serving as a vessel for God’s message of love and redemption.

Becoming Salt and Light is our ultimate goal. The lamp is ultimately an allegory reminding us of our duty to bring God’s flavor and illumination to the world around us.

This world is lacking in hope but all it takes is one person, one lamp to illuminate the darkness!

Her legacy challenges us to live with intention, faith, and a heart for service. Whether the lives we touch are worldwide or under our very own roof. We as women, wives, mothers, daughters, and friends have an impact on others by our actions. Those around us witness our example and their lives are impacted whether we realize it or not!

Let’s live a life of balance, with intention and a legacy that reflects the glory of God our Father to everyone we come in contact with!
