An Art Nouveau Watercolor ACEO Painted After the Rain
There is a particular kind of quiet that settles after a hard rain. The world goes soft and still, and everything waits… not anxiously, but with a kind of patient certainty that the light is coming back. That feeling is what this painting is made of.
The beetle and cosmos were the third prompt in the #bugsinbloom2026 community challenge, hosted by the wonderful @heathermuellerdesign, @jillian.nichole.illustration, @kim_ko_design, @palindromeart, @megpieprint, and @shellypenko. Like all the paintings in this series, it is an ACEO, an Art Card Edition and Original, 2.5 by 3.5 inches of watercolor on cotton. But this tiny card holds a whole atmosphere inside it… fog, and light, and the quiet stubborn promise of a rainbow just out of frame.
The Jewel Beetle… Wearing Something Ancient and Precious
I chose a jewel beetle for this prompt, and once I did I couldn’t imagine anything else. These extraordinary little creatures shift color depending on how the light catches them, blues melting into greens, greens flickering into hints of red and orange, like they are wearing stained glass or something hammered out of an ancient treasury.
That iridescence felt deeply intentional to me… the kind of detail only a Creator who delights in beauty for its own sake would think to tuck into something so small. A jewel beetle has no idea how extraordinary it is. It just goes about its days, glittering.
I wanted to honor that.
The World He Lives In… Fog, Light & a Cosmos in Bloom
He rests on a pale pink cosmos, soft and gentle against his shifting armor. Everything around them is wrapped in a thick muted fog of blues and purples… quiet, muffled, waiting. The kind of atmosphere that mutes the whole world and makes you lean in closer.
But in the upper right corner the mist begins to thin. Gentle streams of light come kissing through, warm and golden and unhurried, the way light always eventually does. It is that exact moment I love most… not the full blazing sun, not yet, but that first tentative promise of it. Hope after a rainstorm. Just waiting, as I always am, for the rainbow to show up.
That is my artistic thesis in a single painting, I think. The light is coming. Hold on.
The Border… A Quiet Bridge Between Warm and Cool
The border in this painting leans yellow into green, a deliberate choice that bridges the warm iridescence of the jewel beetle and the cool foggy world behind him. It holds the tension between the two without forcing a resolution… because that is exactly where hope lives, doesn’t it? In the tension between the storm and the clearing.
It contrasts warmly against the cool background while harmonizing with the greens of the beetle himself. Everything in quiet conversation with everything else.

This painting is watercolor on cotton, 2.5 by 3.5 inches, featuring a luminous jewel beetle resting on a soft pink cosmos, wrapped in a thick atmospheric fog of blues and purples with warm golden light breaking through the upper corner. The yellow-green border bridges warmth and cool in a gentle, natural harmony.
